Few countries in the world can claim to be a truly unique destination, but Madagascar is one of them.

Located off the eastern coast of the southern African mainland, Madagascar is an island some 1,000 miles long by 300 miles wide and offers visitors an opportunity to experience a country which is truly unique in many ways.

Madagascar boasts some of the rarest and most beautiful wildlife in the world, much of which is unique to that country - lemurs and chamaeleons being just two of them. Here also are found ancient spiny forests, rainforest, the spectacular Baobab tree, deserts, mountains and some wonderful resort islands and beaches rivalling those found on other Indian Ocean islands.

But top of the list is the country's lemurs which can be found nowhere else on earth. These beautiful and fascinating creatures can be seen throughout the island and range in size from the tiny Mouse Lemur to the Indri, the largest of them all. To hear the lemurs early morning call throughout a rain forest clouded in heavy morning mist, is an experience never to be forgotten. Naturally friendly animals, some varieties have little fear of humans and are happy to perch on shoulders and examine the heads of those who have come to look for them. Some may be quite happy to take small branches of leaves, or fruit, from human hands which help make any encounter with them a perfectly magical experience.

Madagascar is still relatively under-developed for tourism which gives it a charm all of its own, but, nevertheless, there are many fine hotels which offer accomodation the equivalent of that found at other Indian Ocean locations and provide the visitor with every comfort, enabling you to fully appreciate and enjoy a holiday in this wonderful destination.

Day 2     After breakfast you will be driven to the airport for your flight south to Tulear. Here you will be met and will begin the drive in your 4x4 vehicle to the sandstone massif of the Isalo National Park. You spend two days here to explore the canyons and plateaux of the massif.

Not to be missed is a walk along the Massif marvelling at  the stunning views and arriving late in the afternoon at a natural swimming pool known as 'La Piscine Naturelle' which is fed by a waterfall and fringed by swaying palm trees. A bathe here is a wonderful way to recover from the walk and freshen up.

There is also the option of visiting natural canyons in the area, go horse riding or just relax at your hotel sitting by the swimming pool, playing tennis or luxuriating at the spa.

A wonderful way to finish the day is to watch the setting sun through "La Fenetre", a natural rock formation framing the setting sun!

Day 5     After breakfast the journey north into the highlands continues, stopping en-route at the Anja Reserve where  Ring-Tailed Lemurs might be seen playing amongst the granite rocks. Depending on your journey time there could be the chance to enjoy a leisurely walk into the Ranomafana National Park after you have arrived at and checked into your hotel.

Day 6     After breakfast you will be escorted into Ranomafana National Park for a day to be spent enjoying its diverse attractions. Covering an area of 41,000 hectares Ranomafana National Park has dense rainforest, fast flowing rivers with rapids and spectacular waterfalls. It is home to 12 species of lemur including the Golden Bamboo. Lemurs are not the only attraction for 118 species of bird have been recorded. There are also geckos, chamaeleons, brightly coloured frogs and many varieties of orchids can be seen. A number of trails and footpaths lead you through this dense jungle with its tree palms and ferns. The day spent here will be tiring but will provide lasting memories.

Day 7     After breakfast the journey north is continued.  The town of Antsirabe has been chosen as the place to check into an hotel for the night. Here you can relax and get a good night's sleep before continuing the journey the next day.

Day 8     After an early breakfast your journey north continues to the Andasibe or Perinet National Park. On arrival during the afternoon, you can either relax or visit Lemur Island where lemurs which had previously been kept as pets now live in only a lightly controlled environment.

Day 9     After an early breakfast there will be a full day to explore Andasibe/Perinet National Park. On arrival at the Park you will be introduced to your local wildlife guide and he will be with you throughout the day to help guide you and answer any questions.

Andasibe is a montane forest and as such offers the possibility to spot a variety of lemurs, reptiles and birds. One of its most famous inhabitants is the Indri, the largest of the lemurs, which is often described as a black and white teddy bear.  The Indri's call is heard long before you might see them and their distinctive early morning group communication calls will justify the early start to your day. Other lemurs which can be seen here are the Red-Bellied Lemur, Brown Lemur and the Lesser Bamboo Lemur. Some, such as the Brown Mouse Lemur and Greater Dwarf Lemur are nocturnal, and others, such as the Eastern Woolly Lemur, the Sportive Lemur and the very rare Aye Aye, can only be seen at certain times of the year (September/October through to May)

Day 10     After a leisurely breakfast you will be driven east towards the Pangalanes Canals, a series of lakes that were linked together to form a safe passage up the east coast of Madagascar. You reach your hotel, which is on a private reserve, after a 45 minute boat trip. The rest of the day is free to relax and enjoy watching the lemurs that live in the trees around the hotel.

Day 11     There is no need to rush today and after a leisurely breakfast spent listening to the sounds of the wild animals, you will meet your guide provided by the hotel, and take a walk through the forest. Here it is possible to see Indri,  Sifakas, Black Lemurs, Crowned Lemurs, Black and White Ruffed Lemurs and Red Lemurs. The rest of the day is free to relax.

Day 12     After breakfast you will be taken by boat to Taomasima (Tamatave) which is a 2 hour journey along the Pangalanes Canals. You will pass by villages where you will see the children swimming, the women washing clothes while the men fish –  every day Malagasy scenes.

On arrival at Tamatave you will be driven to the airport for your flight back to Tana.

Day 13     After breakfast you will be driven to the airport to catch your flight to Nosy Be. On arrival you will be met and taken to the local jetty to board a boat to your next destination, the idyllic island of Tsarabanjina.  Set amidst the Mitsio archipelago this is a mountainous island surrounded by beautiful white beaches. It is the ideal place to relax after the last couple of weeks of travelling and exploration. But, for the active, a walk to the top of the mountain affords spectacular views over the island. Snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, diving, water skiing can be done and paid for locally. Excursions to the neighbouring islands in the archipelago by boat helps enhance the enjoyment of staying here.

Days 14, 15 and 16     These days are free for you to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings

Day 17    After a leisurely breakfast you will be met and taken by boat to the mainland and then driven to the airport for your return flight to Tana for the night.
