City, sea and sand - India’s beautiful, tropical southern state of Kerala
Day 01 Fly UK to Kerala
Day 02 On arrival at Cochin Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Fort Cochin.
Cochin (Kochi) is spread across islands and promontories in a stunning location between the Arabian Sea and the Backwaters. The city was founded in 1341 when a flood created a natural safe port, which became the principal harbour for Malabar Coast’s spice trade, on the main trade route between Europe and China. The rulers invited people of various religions to settle here, attracting Jews and Christians who built places of worship and their own communities.
Free time at the hotel to rest a little after your long flight.
Late afternoon, visit a local cultural dance theatre to see live Kathakaly dances and other performing arts of Kerala. Overnight at Cochin
Day 03 Breakfast at the hotel, then guided sightseeing of Cochin including the Dutch Palace at Mattancherry; the Jewish Synagogue at the heart of what is locally called Jew Town; St Francis Church, the oldest European Church in India; Santa Cruz Basilica originally built in 1557 by the Portuguese. Another attraction is the Chinese fishing nets believed to be brought to Kochi by Chinese Traders.
Later in the evening enjoy a guided cruise in the backwaters around Cochin Harbour and watch the sunset. This 2 hour motorboat cruise starts from Fort Cochin, passes by some of the islands around Kochi and finishes at Fort Cochin, where you can watch the sunset at the mouth of the backwaters where it opens out into the Arabian Sea. The Chinese fishing nets standing out in a pink haze against the backdrop of the sunset is a truly memorable sight. Overnight at Cochin
Day 04 After breakfast you will be driven to Marari Beach (60 km / 1.30 hrs).
Here you will stay at a small beach resort, close to the, seemingly, endless golden beach, with its colourful local fishing boats and backdrop of palm and deciduous trees. You can spend time on the beach, laze in hammocks strung between the trees or lie on comforable loungers and sunbathe. You can sit on your own verandah and sip tea or something stronger! In the trees and flowering shrubs which are throughout the resort, you will always see a variety of birds and cute squirrels. There are lots of resorts in this area but this one is special in its intimate feel and that it is very close to the beach unlike many along this stretch of coastline. The food here is also exceptional and you will happily spend your evenings over a leisurely dinner, gazing through the trees watching the sun set over the sea. Overnight at Marari (Breakfast & Dinner)
Day 05 to Day 10 Full days at leisure to enjoy the facilities at the resort or laze on the beach. Day tours to nearby towns or, a daytime cruise on one of the famous houseboats through the backwaters can also be arranged by our local office, or, we can include these for you when you book your holiday. Overnight at Marari (Breakfast and dinner)
Day 11 Breakfast at the hotel. Later drive to Cochin (60 km / 1.30 hrs). Time for last minute shopping or just relaxing at the roof top swimming pool. Overnight at Cochin.
